Trigger warning: death, police brutality, violence, resource insecurity, Islamophobia, hate crime
2024 reminded us of the depth of human suffering and the resilience that can arise in the face of adversity. As sorors of Zeta Sigma Chi, our mission compels us to not only bear witness to these challenges but to act, embodying the values of justice, equity, and compassion in all that we do. Below are some of the most pressing global and national issues of 2024 and why they should matter deeply to us as individuals and as a sisterhood.
The War in Gaza: A Humanitarian Crisis
The escalating violence in Gaza has caused untold suffering, with families displaced, lives lost, and homes destroyed. For the people of Gaza, daily survival is a fight against incredible odds. Children are growing up amidst rubble, while humanitarian organizations face immense challenges in delivering food, water, and medical supplies.
As sorors committed to social justice, we cannot turn away from this devastation. The crisis in Gaza reminds us of our shared humanity and the responsibility we have to advocate for peace and equity. By supporting organizations like UNRWA and Doctors Without Borders, we can help provide lifesaving assistance to those who need it most.

Democratic Republic of Congo: A Plea for Hope
In the DRC, communities have been shattered by relentless violence. Armed groups like M23 continue to terrorize vulnerable populations, displacing over 135,000 people. Refugees lack basic necessities like food, shelter, and healthcare, and many have no place to turn.
As a sisterhood rooted in care, we have the power to amplify the voices of those who are suffering and support organizations that bring hope and aid to these communities. Groups like the International Rescue Committee, Save the Children, and UNHCR are working tirelessly to provide relief.

Ukraine: Standing Together Through Crisis
The war in Ukraine continues to devastate lives, with cities destroyed and families torn apart. Beyond its borders, the conflict has disrupted food supply chains, increasing the burden on impoverished nations worldwide. Ukraine’s struggle is a stark reminder of how interconnected we all are.
We can stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine by supporting organizations like Razom for Ukraine, UNICEF Ukraine, and World Central Kitchen. They are bringing critical aid, feeding the hungry, and keeping hope alive.

Hurricane Helene and Milton: The Power of Unity in Disaster
Hurricane Helene devastated communities in Florida and surrounding areas, leaving destruction in its wake. Lives were uprooted, and the storm served as a harsh reminder of the growing impact of climate change on natural disasters.
In October 2024, Hurricane Milton devastated Florida’s west-central coast as a Category 3 storm, bringing winds over 100 mph, torrential rain, and deadly storm surges, resulting in at least 24 fatalities and over $30 billion in damages. The storm displaced thousands, caused widespread power outages, and left communities struggling to recover.
For those of us who value community, this is a call to action. These are two hurricanes we Whether it’s rebuilding homes or advocating for climate justice, there is a role for each of us to play. Organizations like the American Red Cross, Team Rubicon, and GlobalGiving are providing relief to affected families.

Global Climate Advocacy
At COP28, world leaders made meaningful progress with the Loss and Damage Fund, a vital step toward supporting nations most impacted by climate change. For us as sorors of Zeta Sigma Chi, this isn’t just a global issue—it’s a personal one. Many of the communities affected by rising seas, extreme weather, and environmental injustice are home to people who look like us, share our stories, and deserve the same opportunities for safety and stability. Our commitment to social justice calls us to care deeply about climate equity and to advocate for solutions that ensure every community has the resources to recover, rebuild, and thrive.

Fighting for Reproductive Rights
Here in the United States, reproductive rights remain under threat. Many people, especially those in marginalized communities, face significant barriers to accessing safe and legal abortion care. This ongoing struggle highlights the importance of standing together for health equity and bodily autonomy.
Our advocacy can make a difference. Supporting organizations like the National Network of Abortion Funds (donate here) ensures that people in need can access essential healthcare.

This month’s blog highlighted critical social justice issues, including conflicts in Gaza, Ukraine, and Congo, as well as the devastating effects of Hurricane Helene and the ongoing fight for reproductive and climate justice. Together, through global advocacy and support for one another, we can uphold the values of service, sisterhood, and justice.
